Donald Sutherland has passed away. Born on July 17 1935, Sutherland had at one time been considered for a role in Doctor Who in his case in The Gunfighters. Reading from TARDIS Wiki and citing Doctor Who: The Complete History volume 7, Sutherland was the original choice to play Wyatt Earp which ultimately went to John Alderson. Sutherland's name also came up as a possible Doctor for a proposed Doctor Who movie. Sutherland had a long career which included playing Merrick in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1992 which would eventually lead into the well known TV series of the same name. For Sutherland it was not the first time that he had been in a movie that would become the basis for a TV series as he had played Hawkeye Pierce in the original M*A*S*H movie in 1970. Other work included Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (with Peter Cushing as the titular Dr Terror), The Saint, The Avengers, The Dirty Dozen, Billion Dollar Brain, Man in a Suitcase, The Champions, Kelly's Heroes, S*P*Y*S (despite the title being the same way it has no relation to his earlier movie M*A*S*H), The Eagle Has Landed, The Kentucky Fried Movie, National Lampoon's Animal House, The Great Train Robbery, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Murder by Decree, Ordinary People, Ordeal by Innocence, Lock Up, JFK, The Simpsons, Fallen, Space Cowboys, The Italian Job, Cold Mountain, Frankenstein, Pride & Prejudice, An American Haunting, Commander in Chief, Astro Boy, The Pillars of the Earth, Moby thingy, Treasure Island, The Hunger Games movies, The Leisure Seeker, Ad Astra, Moonfall & Mr. Harrigan's Phone. He died on June 20 2024, 27 days before his 89th birthday. Among the family members who survived him is his eldest son and 24 star Kiefer Sutherland.

November 23 2024 marks the 61st anniversary of Doctor Who. Two days after the previous anniversary, the 60th saw the start of the 60th Anniversary Specials with David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and Catherine Tate back as Donna Noble and written by returning showrunner Russell T. Davies. Contrary to what was expected the last of these specials The Giggle did not see a regeneration but Ncuti Gatwa still turned up as the Fifteenth Doctor. This is because that instead of a regeneration it was for the first time ever a bigeneration. This saw 15 coming out of 14 and 14 is last seen still alive as he has lunch with Donna and her family while 15 goes off on his own adventure. After a cameo in Jodie Whittaker's swansong The Power of the Doctor, The Giggle saw the full NuWho debut by Bonnie Langford as Mel, formerly the companion to the Sixth and Seventh Doctors. Langford then returned as Mel in The Legend of Ruby Sunday/ Empire of Death, the two-part finale of the first Gatwa season. Gatwa's first full adventure as the Doctor was the 2023 Christmas Special The Church on Ruby Road which introduced new companion Ruby Sunday played by Millie Gibson. 15 and Ruby then had a season of adventures months later. For the first time ever, this season started with a double episode with Space Babies & The Devil's Chord whose main plots aren't connected with each other. The rest of the season had single episodes each out on its own which started with Boom written by former showrunner Steven Moffat and guest stars Varada Sethu. Sethu will appear as new companion Belinda Chandra in the next season but plays a different character Mundy Flynn in Boom. In fact Sethu's appearance in Boom was very unexpected and she had been announced as the new companion in the 2025 season before the 2024 season had started. After Boom came not one but two Doctor-lite episodes with 73 Yards & Dot and Bubble. 73 Yards had Millie Gibson carrying this episode as Ruby brilliantly in place of a mostly absent Doctor. Then came Rogue otherwise known as the Bridgerton episode with Jonathan Groff as the said Rogue. Rogue also guest stars Indira Varma, who had been Torchwood's Suzie Costello, but plays a different character or to be more precise characters as she played the Duchess of Pemberton before being killed early on and her form gets adopted by a shapeshifting Chuldur. A particularly curio about Rogue is that it apparently canonised the Scream of the Shalka Doctor played by Richard E. Grant. This came when the Fifteenth Doctor showed images of his other faces to Rogue and this included the face of Richard E. Grant. A curiously thing in these adventures across time and space is the Doctor and Ruby seeing the same woman (played by Susan Twist). This mystery comes to the fore for the two-part season finale The Legend of Ruby Sunday//Empire of Death as it turned out she was a trap set by Sutekh who the Fourth Doctor and Sarah encountered in the 1975 story Pyramids of Mars with Gabriel Woolf returning to voice this very character. Sutekh is revealed to have ridden on the TARDIS since Pyramids of Mars. Also running through these adventures was who is Ruby's birth mother as the mother left Ruby as a baby on Ruby Road hence how she got her name. After Sutekh got dealt with in Empire of Death, Ruby finally found her birth mother and this led to Ruby's adventures with the Doctor apparently coming to an end. Also present in these adventures is the mysterious Mrs Flood played by Anita Dobson, a mystery that is yet to be solved and Mrs Flood ended this season as she comments on Ruby getting a happy ending and says that the Doctor's story ends in absolute terror! With this season seeing the return of Sutekh, I read on TARDIS Wiki that the anniversary in 2009 saw the release of The Judgment of Sutekh. This is a story from the Faction Paradox audio series produced by Magic Bullet Productions also with Woolf reprising Sutekh.
